A great restaurant, but too noisy. Why do so many restaurants think noisy is good? I've heard it's so you won't stay any longer than you have to. Sorry for the editorial comment!

Good place to play darts, good beer prices, several pool tables. A great all-around old-school pub.
  • The Eldridge Hotel, GM (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
This hotel was the major tactical objective of Quantrill, during his raid of August 21, 1863. The Jayhawker in the Eldridge Hotel was a meeting place for free-staters and jayhawkers. Quantrill led his attach against this anti-slavery group and knew that the Eldridge was the place to find them. Many historical accounts recall that guests were awakened by shouts, gunshots, and the hotel alarm bell. The defenseless guests were forced to surrender their personal valuables in return for their safety. The untruly raiders raiders threatened the prisoner's lives until Quantrill was further persuaded by Robert S. Stevens, an attorney, to honor his promise. The guests were then moved to the City Hotel. The rapid surrender of the Eldridge House enabled the raiders to proceed, virtually without resistance, into other parts of the city.

This location is marked as the "true center of Goolge Maps" in the GM application. (It starts at a wide zoom; if you zoom in without panning, you will wind up somewhere in this vicinity.) http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/dec/21/lawrence_pinpointed_center_google_earth/

Unless I'm mistaken, William Burroughs house is very near 19th and Haskell. You can barely make out the swimming pool in the back yard surrounded by trees.
